WMBA 2010 President's Address

The crack of the bat.... The smell of the grass.... The pop of the glove....

It’s been a long winter, but the signs of summer are finally here.  Welcome to Whitby Minor Baseball where, since 1969, we have been providing the children of Whitby an active and safe environment to enjoy baseball, but more importantly the opportunity to create memorable summer experiences and life-long friendships.

Our Executive has been working with the Town of Whitby since 2004 on new park initiatives and I would like to take the opportunity to update you on these.   We are very excited to announce improvements to Peel and Pringle Parks as a result of a successful grant application by the Town of Whitby.  At Peel Park in particular, the improvements will be significant for the WMBA, with intent to upgrade diamonds, fencing, dugouts, and install additional lighting.  Although we are not yet certain when work will begin, we have planned for the possibility of losing Peel diamonds #1 - #4 during the 2010 season and may need assistance from our neighbouring communities to field all your games this summer.  Week night diamond time continues to be at a premium in Whitby, so please bear with us as we work with the Town to improve your overall baseball experience.  We will contact affected coaches with new park locations if required, during the season.

The Peewee division will be experiencing something new this year.  Two Oshawa teams will join our house league program and will play an inter-locking schedule with our 12 Peewee teams for a total of 14 teams in this division.  Look out for the occasional Oshawa diamond on your schedule, either at Lakeview Park (Simcoe Street at the Lake) or Ritson Fields (North Oshawa).  We are also thrilled to have teamed up with the Whitby Chiefs Senior Men’s Team who, in March & April, hosted pre-season spring training baseball sessions at the Whitby Dome.  WMBA will further host additional Pitching, Fielding and Hitting Clinics during the early baseball months.  We hope these clinics provide tips to our coaches and players to pass on to their friends and teammates.

Sponsorship is vital to our Association.   Without the many organizations we partner with each year, we would not be able to put as many kids as we do on the diamonds.  Thank you to Rep & House League Sponsors for joining us for 2010.   We could not field all our players without their assistance and we encourage you to visit and support their businesses which are listed under Sponsors > Our Sponsors on the website.

Your primary WMBA contact this season will be your coach, who will answer your questions with assistance from our Division Conveners.  If you need to reach your convener, their e-mail addresses can be found under About Us > Contact Us on our website, which will be re-launched on May 1st with a new look!  We have recently launched on-line monthly newsletters and Facebook as additional ways for our Executive to reach you directly!

Remember to ask your coach what you can do to help. These ladies and gentlemen put a great deal of personal time into making your child’s season a success.  It is said that your child’s involvement in any sport is directly proportional to the effort and interest you exhibit, so please consider sending us your name and contact info to WMBA to volunteer for just one of our many season events.  No contribution is too small; an hour or two, once or twice a year can mean all the difference.  Have a wonderful season!

Yours in baseball,

Bill Rourke, WMBA President 2010
